Gambling History - History Of Slots

Original slot machines were operated using a lever and so were often dubbed 'one armed bandits'. The first such one armed bandit was invented by Charles Fey in 1887 in California. It was called the 'Liberty Bell' and had three reels and five symbols; horse shoes, diamonds, spades, hearts, and a bell. The biggest payout line was three bells in a row, or three liberty bells, and it paid out ten nickels. Another kind of gambling machine also contributed to the modern day slot machines and it was invented by Sittman and Pitt in New York. This machine was based on poker and had 50 card faces in five drums. It was also operated by means of a lever which would spin the drums and produce a poker hand. The aim was to get as good a hand as possible. The payouts depended on the bar or club where the machine was situated; so an example of a prize would be a free beer or a cigar. The house advantage of these machines could be re arranged by rearranging the drums, by taking out some cards for example.

The Bell Fruit Gum Machine, which came about as a result of the success of these two earlier machines, also gave out prizes instead of money. The prizes were sticks of fruit gum and were issued automatically out of the machine. The symbols on the machine were also fruit gum flavours and the popular melon and cherry symbols we can still find today in slot machines came from this machine, as well as the common BAR symbol which derives from a Bell Fruit Gum logo. This idea of paying out in prizes like food or drink was a popular way of working around gambling laws and many similar machines appeared, giving various different prizes. There were eventually subject to much controversy as the courts argued that they appealed to the player's desire to get something for nothing, which was essentially the whole point of gambling.

In 1963 Bally Gaming invented the first fully mechanical slot machine, the 'Money Honey'. It was the first machine able to pay out coins automatically and soon the lever was replaced by a button. Some casino slot machines still have levers but they are very much for effect.

Slot machines did not become widespread until they were featured in casinos on the Vegas strip in the early 60s. Random number generators began being used in slot machines in the 70s to determine the spin of the reels and the machines became less expensive and even more profitable. Nowadays slot machines are completely electronic and have evolved into many different varieties.
