Gambling History - History Of Roulette

Roulette is said to be the oldest existing casino game. They say it is as old as the wheel itself - some accounts refer to the game having evolved from people using actual wheels and spinning them on the ground for amusement. It is certainly true that the roulette, often dubbed īthe king of all casino gamesī, is one of the classiest and glamorous of them all. It has been considered the game of choice for the elite; perhaps because of the strong element of luck involved and the high house advantage.

Roulette has always fascinated casino patrons and people have of course tried to develop systems with which to beat the house. One such system was the Martingale betting system which consisted of doubling the bet every time there was a loss, the theory being that the first win would then recover all losses. But no roulette betting system has ever been proven to work and players have come to accept the huge element of luck which roulette involves and the thrill that naturally comes with it. Other games have come to overtake roulette in terms of popularity, games with lower house edges, but the roulette wheel still occupies a place of honor in casinos worldwide.

The term roulette comes from the French for 'little wheel' and it is believed that our modern day roulette evolved in France and was developed from several other wheel based games being played in Europe in the 1700's. One such game was Roly Poly, an English game which was banned, despite its popularity, in 1740. The first more modern roulette wheels appeared in French casinos in 1796. Originally the wheels would have had both a single and a double zero. The wheels with only a single zero did not appear until the 1800's and were introduced by Francois and Louis Blanc. These two French brothers were eventually invited to open a casino in Monte Carlo when gambling was prohibited in the rest of Europe. The roulette game gained a lot of its popularity in the elegant and elite casinos of Monte Carlo. Europeans in New Orleans brought roulette to the United States. The double zero wheels survived in the States and so became known as the American wheels, as opposed to the European single zero wheels.
