 The History of Gambling

Gambling is one of the most ancient past times attributed to man. Long before it was known as gambling, gaming, wagering or betting, people would find ways to try to gain an instant material or financial gain by wagering either money or something of value on an uncertain outcome. It has even been said that gambling is in our nature as humans. People get a thrill out of betting on the uncertain and are always attracted to the idea of getting rich quick. The word 'gamble' comes from the old English word for 'to play games' but has come to mean to take a risk which has significant potential gain.

We know gambling has been around for a very long time because various ancient materials have been found which point to a habit of playing and wagering. The first dice, for example seem to have been created by the Chinese as far back as 2300 BC. There is evidence of gambling in the history of the world's most sophisticated empires; the Chinese, the Romans, the Egyptians; all left proof of some sort of gambling. The first recorded reference to gambling was found on an ancient tablet in the Pyramid of Cheops in Egypt.

By the 17th century, gambling was already a very popular past time and was not without its share of controversy. King Henry VIII is known to have issued a ban on gambling because it was distracting his armies from their work. It was also met with a great deal of religious opposition as it was considered a terrible vice capable of destroying whole livelihoods and families. The main forms of gambling in the middle ages were dice games, lotteries and cards. Spectator sports were also soon adapted for gambling purposes. Betting on horse racing became extremely popular in England in the 1700s.

Playing cards have an interesting history of their own. They are also thought to have been developed by the Chinese, who invented paper and paper money. Playing cards are said to have eventually been brought to Europe by the Muslim Mameluke Empire where the deck we are most familiar with today was developed by the French. It is a well known fact that the Queen in a deck of cards was a replacement of another male noble and was probably not introduced until the 1500s. The joker was not introduced into decks until later, when card games became popular in America.
